Kurt Drummer made a name for himself as a TV chef and cookery book author in the GDR. Kurt Drummer made a name for himself as a television chef and cookery book author in the GDR. But he also won numerous cookery competitions.
Kurt Drummer, born in Gornsdorf in the Ore Mountains in 1928, learnt the trade of chef in Chemnitz at the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof. From 1946, he worked for renowned chefs, including at the Wartburg, the Hotel Elephant in Weimar and again in Chemnitz. He received his master chef's certificate in 1955. From 1958, he moved to German television, where he introduced audiences to the culinary arts in 650 episodes of "Der Fernsehkoch empfiehlt" until 1983. His television appearances and cookery books had a lasting impact on East German food culture. From 1965 to 1990, Drummer was also head chef of the hotel chain "Vereinigung Interhotel". As such, he successfully took part in numerous cookery competitions. In 1986, he received the "Master Chef of the International Class" award and in 1999, one year before his death, the Culinary Medal of the German Chefs' Association.
Kurt Drummer's estate includes around 30 awards and medals from international cookery competitions, including the "Gold Medal Award for an Outstanding Exhibit on the Table d'Honneur" from the 11th International Gastronomy Competition in Torquay (UK) in 1969, as well as personal documents such as his master chef certificate from 1955 and a photo album with numerous pictures documenting his long career. The collection also includes a yellow chef's hat specially made for black and white television. The collection also includes several cookery books co-authored by Drummer, such as "Das Fernsehkochbuch" and "Die besten Rezepte aus der Fernsehküche", some of which are first editions.
