Publication Consulting

If you would like to publish a scientific paper, we advise you on the choice of journals and teach you the basics of academic identity management. If required, we will also develop a comprehensive publication strategy.

You have written an essay and are undecided where to publish it? You have been offered to publish in a journal, but you doubt its seriousness?

For a publication, the publisher expects an ORCID-iD from you, but you don't know what that is? We offer you various information and advisory services on these questions.

Academic identity management

A successful scientific career is increasingly dependent on visibility within the research community. But how can you ensure unique identification in different credential systems despite name duplications or changes, different spellings and changes of institution? The publisher- and institution-independent platform ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) has established itself globally as the recommended standard for creating a permanent personal identification number. With an ORCID-iD you make it possible that your scientific publications can actually be clearly assigned to you as author:in. In our course "ORCID in practice" you will learn everything about the registration and use of your ORCID-iD. In addition, we will help you with the application in the publication process as well as with the linking to other personal profiles such as the Web of Science ResearcherID or the Scopus Author ID.

Journal recommendation

Are you looking for a suitable publication venue for your new article? We support you in identifying journals that are suitable in terms of subject matter and quality assurance: taking into account your prioritised selection criteria, we prepare individual proposals for the publication of your research results based on the title, abstract and references of your planned publication. If you are interested in an open access publication, we will identify appropriate journals for you in which you can publish free of charge or with funding from SLUB. The recommendation system B!SON, which was jointly developed by TIB Hannover and SLUB Dresden, can also help you as a freely accessible research tool to publish your academic work in an OA journal that is read in your subject community.

Reputation of journals and publishers

The diversity of the publishing industry, with its large number of journals and publishers, unfortunately also brings players with dishonest or even fraudulent intentions onto the scene. A professional-looking website is quickly put together and an editorial board with respected researchers is identified without their knowledge and thus, unfortunately, not always a guarantee for the seriousness of publication media. Often, indexing information in established publication databases is only faked or indexing is done in reference systems without quality assurance. The initiative Think. Check. Submit. initiative offers checklists to help you choose a trustworthy publication medium or publisher. On the basis of the criteria listed, you can check their seriousness yourself before making a decision. With our consulting services, we support your review and help you to place publications in the best possible way. If the worst comes to the worst, we will actively help you to withdraw a misplaced submission.

Metrics

The success of scientific work is primarily assessed by means of the reception intensity of publications. Whether and to what extent an article or monograph is perceived and discussed within a specialist community is determined with the help of bibliometric procedures based on the number of citations of a work. The use of such quantitative factors as the h-index or the journal impact factor to assess research performance is currently the subject of critical debate. It should always be done responsibly and with an awareness of the metrics used and the associated data basis. With our consulting services, we are happy to support you in the selection and interpretation of bibliometric metrics, help you in the collection of self-reported data, for example in connection with applications, and teach you about the limits of quantitatively supported statements on the quality of scientific work.

Publication monitoring

University rankings are largely based on the number of publications published and their impact measured in citations. However, such indicators are also of great importance for the evaluation of individual research areas or units. We download these data monthly from the relevant bibliographic databases, allocate them to individual organisational units and enrich this dataset with data from other sources. On this data basis, we are able to create an up-to-date picture of publication output or citation impact or their development at various levels of analysis. Other applications in publication monitoring include cooperation analyses or the determination of the proportion of Open Access publications. Our experts will be happy to advise you on the various methods and analysis options.
